My son at 19 has just endured this, an Apprentice Mechanic stripped of his Learner Licence for 4 months due to his HBA1C. He is employed up to 54 hours weekly, was his Employer’s Apprentice of the Year, was Outstanding in his TAFE Studies, plays Multiple Team sports 3 times a week, attends a gym. He is well and has not been admitted to hospital for 5 years. At 19 he was no longer at a Children’s Hospital seeing the expert Endocronogist that had treated him for 8 years, it was a local Endocronologist with minimum knowledge of him.
We tried to get help from his local lifetime Doctors who know he is well and have treated his sporting injuries. They cannot overrule a specialist.
We appealed meaning appearing in court with people who have committed offences. We were fighting guidelines that people didn’t know about, 8 RTA staff so far in front of a judge that may also not know about Diabetes and the guidelines. I have met with some State and Federal MPs since, have contributed information for 1 newspaper story and contacted 2 more Editors and The Australian Diabetes Council and will do more stories. My son has been a Diabetes Advocate in the past 5 years and had media evidence to support his case.
If we had trouble fighting this how would any other person without evidence go? We will continue to raise awareness about this in support of all Diabetics. We don’t want others to endure the 4 month battle we did.
